I’m guessing that being a mutant in this future means that you have some sort of genetic glitch that alters your appearance, like how Stella has green hair and that star marking on her left cheek.

And some special abilities. In Stella’s case, star mutants do not feel extreme temperatures or get damaged by them. And she has the basic healing factor and high resistance to pain. Because of this, she had an advantage at her job.
