Why does velvet only have to come in red? It doesn't! Velvet is a texture after all. What makes pink velvet special is that it is a feminine cake in that it is made of all the things girls were said to be made of metaphorically in the old nursery rhyme. I made this cake as an experiment in real life and it's wonderful! The spice is subtle though the velvet texture comes through perfectly. I am going to try velvet cakes in other colours/flavors too. Moreover, I recommend it with vanilla or cinnamon buttercream (cinnamon is usually coloured bright red like candy).

Update: If making a 9 inch round cake, raise the temperature to 350.

I love velvet cakes because they feel fancy, but are easier to make. You don't have to separate eggs or use 50 million different bowls which I like. Thanks. I wanted to reference femininity and womanhood in different ways in the pic.

Didn't put in enough food colouring, so the pink was a little...diluted, but still gave it a go in cupcake form! Still: great texture and one of the more elaborate recipes I've tried out, and I really liked it! I'm definitely going to try this again with the cinnamon/ginger lessened though, I'm curious to see what the combination of the vanilla and raspberry is like without those over it O:
