Sadly, it is not uncommon for things like this to happen in baking competitions.

Comments:

Oh crud.

Now it's truly a baking contest comic

21st Jun 2022, 10:14 AM

Yeah. Unfortunately, stuff like this does happen in actual baking contests. One of the brighter sides about it is that the other contestants are very compassionate. They aren't opportunistic or venomous about someone's mishap.

21st Jun 2022, 10:38 AM

Of course they are, that sort of compassion and camerderie is what's expected of you in competition at that level, it's deep inside where they quietly say "one down"

22nd Jun 2022, 8:30 AM

Yes and no. On one hand, everyone wants to win, but on the other, nobody wants anyone to lose like this. Nobody wishes for someone to drop their pastry after working so hard on it. At least, I wouldn't.

Pain, suffering, agony, despair, torture

21st Jun 2022, 11:31 AM

See The Great British Bake-off for enough examples to suit.

21st Jun 2022, 4:54 PM

That is precisely where I got my inspiration from.

21st Jun 2022, 5:31 PM

Call me jaded but I can never help but wonder if a very large part of such happenstances are according to the script and getting a guaranteed payment to 'take a fall' can be better than taking a chance on a bigger prize you're unsure you can win.

22nd Jun 2022, 8:32 AM

Actually, it isn't scripted. I did research and it really, really isn't which is why I have a genuine respect for baking competitions.

22nd Jun 2022, 8:42 AM

That's good to hear! ^.^

22nd Jun 2022, 1:40 PM

I succumbed to the blandishments of my local PBS feed and bought the set of DVDs. Oh, and several cookbooks as well. You can't take me *anywhere*....

23rd Jun 2022, 5:12 PM

oops!

22nd Jun 2022, 9:03 AM

Aww! :(

22nd Jun 2022, 1:40 PM

Everyone is so sad. They are really nice people.

22nd Jun 2022, 9:00 PM

Who wants to win like this?

22nd Jun 2022, 9:01 PM

The contestants in the GBBO (above-mentioned) all seem genuinely to like each other and their condolences to those who don't make the cut seem likewise genuine.

23rd Jun 2022, 5:14 PM

Exactly. I doubt anything is fixed.

23rd Jun 2022, 5:16 PM

Agreed, it tends to happen a lot, also in webcomics :p

At least she tried to warn the guy. For him, it was just a second and... boom. He tripped over his foot.
